What the work actually is

Frontier AI labs pay licensed attorneys to teach their models how lawyers reason. In practice that means building a problem your own practice would find ordinary and making a model fail at it — then writing the reference answer and the rubric that grades what it produced.

It is closer to writing board questions or precepting a resident than to anything people picture when they hear the words gig work. You are not labelling images. You are being asked to make your judgment explicit, in writing, so a machine can learn from it.

Most people who stay say the same thing: it is the most interesting thing they do all week.

What it pays

Rates are set by practice area and seniority, and they are unusually good because credentialed reviewers are scarce and the labs know it.

Figures above come from current public listings. Your rate is set in your offer, and nobody can promise you a number in advance.

Whether you are eligible

The platforms want the same three things, and the bar is real:

• A current, active, unrestricted licence. Inactive or retired status will usually disqualify you — and that is a status many people elect without thinking about it, to skip renewal fees and CME.
• Recent practice. Several listings ask for three or more years of active practice. Being some years out is a harder problem than an inactive licence, because you cannot fix it by filing a form.

Stepping back from full-time practice is not a problem. Having stopped is.

   Specialty, seniority, and whether your administrative or teaching experience opens a second route. Most people have more than one. The platforms make you pick one.

2. Get you set up

   Accounts, model access, the handful of tools the work requires. This is where the hours go, and none of it is hard once someone shows you.

3. Show you what good looks like

   How these models fail, what a strong reference answer contains, and where the line sits between using a model in your work and letting it write for you. That second one is what gets people removed.

4. Put you in front of the right project

   Not a list of links. A specific opening, with a reason, and what to expect from the assessment.

5. Stay with you through the first month

   Which is when almost everyone quietly stops.
